2012 CIBA Division II Champs

Another year, another trophy.

NS and the Charterland team have once again won the Cayman Islands Basketball Association Division II League championship! I could go on and on and on with highlights for you (after all, I attended two whole games), but I think it's better to hear it from the man himself.

Check out the slideshow below to hear a recent Radio Cayman interview with the team's hero.

You think I'm making the "hero" title up? Nope. Just quoting a trustworthy news source. Per the Cayman Compass:

Nathan Smith did it all this season for team Charterland, including being a hero.
Smith had the game-winning free-throw as his club defeated the Butterfield Shockwaves 73-67 last Sunday at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. The contest marked game three of the best-of-three division two finals in the Cayman Islands Basketball Association 2012 national men’s league.
The victory gives Charterland their second straight championship. Butterfield gave them a scare in game one with a 75-73 upset before game two ended up a 75-40 thrashing by the reigning champs.
Smith states he was happy to step up on Sunday.
“It feels good, it was something I was looking forward to,” Smith said. “We lost our Most Valuable Player for 2011 in Jonathan Rosa but we picked up Will Koutney and we got to put together another championship team.”
On the statistics sheet, Smith had a solid double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Koutney followed suit with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Jeremy Strickland had 11 points and four assists while Scott Murray was the top scorer with 21 points off two three-pointers, six assists and five steals.
Butterfield had good performances from Peter Grant (21 points off two treys, eight rebounds), Darryl Paddyfoot (16 points, 16 rebounds) and Phillip Webb (11 points, 18 rebounds).
To their credit, the Shockwaves rattled Charterland in the finale. Butterfield were down 34-30 by half-time, 57-42 at the end of the third quarter and 67-46 midway through the fourth period before rallying to within four points with 41.7 seconds left.

Congrats, team!
